Võ Nguyên Giáp is one of the most famous people in Vietnamese history. He was a general and a politican. He was born in Quảng Bình Province in patriotic family with traditional Confucian. When he was young, he worked as a history teacher and he made a particular study of Napoleon, French general and emperor, learning from his practical examples which influenced his military decisions later. He met Hồ Chí Minh and joined up with his organization. Finding his military leadership capacity, Hồ Chí Minh directed him to establish and build Armed Propaganda Brigades, the precursor organization of Vietnam People’s Army. He was not only an excellent commander, he also proved as a mastermind military builder: expanding the Armed Propaganda Brigades from a small self-defense force into a large conventional army.
He served as the Chief Commander, however, he has neither been the first defense minister nor been the first general of Vietnam People’s Army. He was only the first General, an officer of very high rank in the army. The especial things were he had no direct military training and had never hold any lower military ranks before he was promoted to General. Being a military strategist, he faced the French and American generals who participate in battles in WW2 and then defeated them.
After the successful August Revolution in 1945, he served as the first Minister of Internal Affair, issuing the legal documents, in Hồ Chí Minh administration, probably because he studied law when he was young. The second times France has invaded Vietnam. He and Hồ Chí Minh and other leaders led the forces armed outdated equipment to fight against the French occupying forces. He became the famous commander with his military achievements, especially Điện Biên Phủ campaign victory. His victory over the French was an important inspiration to anti-colonial campaigners around the world because he proved that a colonial country can defeat a military power.Phong Nguyễn
