Bà La:How about the Tet offensive(Sự kiện Tết Mậu Thân???)It’s a key about the end of war and that also is American forces withdrawing from Vietnam on my book.Do you agree that statement?Do you think it’s black history ?
Phong Nguyễn:Your question is interesting.I don’t think this Event signaled the end of the war. In my opinion, Tet Offensive Event was been conducted just to prove that Vietnam Liberation Army (the Western media call VC) does not weak and will not be defeated soon as the American’s propaganda. Because, in 1967, the American administration became alarming by criticism and the percentage of Americans who believed the U.S. gain victory has reduced. Therefore, the U.S. administration tried to convince the American people that the administration’s policies were succeeding by optimistic news. Vietnamese leaders also know that the U.S. administration only want to win the war quickly, if the war lasted so long, they would face the anti-war protests, the U.S National Assembly may change their opinions and the longer the worse. On the other hand, this Event was a political victory, but it was a military failure. Because it lasted so long, there were up to three phases instead of one. If the Event had only one phase, the result would have been good. Surprise factor is the key to success. After the first phase, the U.S. army was vigilant, any such attacks would be suicide. The Event had two more phases, perhaps some Hà Nội officials wanted to win the war quickly. The offensive was conducted just by the special forces without the support of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery or planes. These forces must face millions of troops with tanks, artillery and planes. Victory is impossible. Vietnamese generals and officials who directly fight against the French army certainly cannot make such decisions, because they know it is very difficult to win such a rival in plain terrain. Therefore, I believe the decision to launch the general offensive was abnormal. In addition, after Tet Offensive Event, the Vietnamese forces suffered serious damage. They couldn’t conduct any military campaign until 1972, the area under their control was narrowed. Thus, this Event was not the key of the end of war.“The U.S. only accept withdrawal from Vietnam after their air attacks have failed in Hanoi.” President Hồ Chí Minh said in the 1960s and He had directed Air and Air Defence Force studied how to fight against B-52 bombers. This prediction became true in 1972.
